Home to the famed 12th century castle, Lancaster is a small, charming city with all the amenities of a large one, including 2 repertory theatres, cinemas, literary and musical events, and a wide variety of restaurants and shops. Lancaster lies on the west coast of Britain, one hour from the famous Lake District. Also close at hand are the great urban centers of Liverpool and Manchester. Edinburgh and Glasgow are 2 hours north and London 3 hours south by train. Paris is about 7 hours via the Channel Tunnel. The nearest major international airport is Manchester.

Allegheny students can spend the fall or spring semester, or an academic year at Lancaster. The fall semester program begins in mid-August, and consists of the four-week pre-semester course and the 10-week "Michaelmas term". The spring semester consists of two 10-week terms ("Lent" and "Summer") and has a 4-week break between the terms.

Studying at Lancaster is a different educational experience than that found in most North American colleges or universities. As at Allegheny, undergraduate instruction includes lectures, seminars, laboratory sessions, papers and examinations. Most Lancaster courses follow a similar format, but a large portion of classroom time is spent in tutorial and seminar groups numbering from four to fifteen members. Much emphasis is placed on reading widely, and on making use of what is read in essays and in seminars.

It is highly recommended that students complete 4 semesters at Allegheny prior to studying at Lancaster, however exceptions will be considered. Students need to have a strong "B" in their major, and/or in subjects they plan to take at Lancaster, in order to apply.

Allegheny students are first approved to study off-campus, and then apply to their chosen program. To be approved by Allegheny, stop by Reis Hall to pick up the approval guidelines or access the guidelines on the web at http://www.allegheny.edu/ accel/international/studies/guidelines.php. Deadlines to submit the approval packet are February 20 for the fall program and September 20 for the spring program. Approval packets submitted prior to the deadline will be reviewed upon submission.

Lancaster's campus setting fosters a wide variety of extracurricular activities in which American students are enthusiastic and welcome participants. These include a campus radio station, a student run newspaper, various arts and entertainment, multiple sports and recreation activities, and numerous clubs and societies. The International Concert Series brings to the campus major orchestras and solo artists. The Great Hall and Nuffield Theatre provide facilities for both professional and student performances.

The Residential Colleges at Lancaster enable students to be part of a smaller close-knit community which provide social and study facilities, practical support and information as well as somewhere to live. Study abroad students are guaranteed a room on campus in one of 6000 single study bedrooms, most of which have private shower rooms and live with a mix of British undergraduates and international students who come from most parts of the world. The rooms are grouped around communal lounges and kitchen areas where students gather and most prepare snacks and meals. Each study bedroom has wired Internet access and a telephone - teaching spaces and the centre of the campus are wireless - and most students rely on locally bought cell phones.

Students are charged Allegheny tuition and room, and the $300 off-campus fee. Allegheny aid, with the exception of work-study, is applied to program costs. Allegheny will pay for student's tuition and room in Lancaster; this includes tuition and room for the August pre-session option, and room during the break between Lent and Summer terms (the rooms are usually singles, with a wash basin and shared bathrooms). Additional costs include refundable dorm deposit, optional bedding pack ($50), printer paper ($0.10/sheet); meals ($800-$1200 for fall, $1200-$1500 for spring); insurance; international airfare ($800-$900); and personal expenses, including passport and local transportation and break travel ($1000-$1800).
