book jacket Specialization:
  • Colonial American History

A member of the Allegheny College Department of History since 1981, I am responsible for teaching our American history survey course, classes in Colonial America, the history of the American Revolution, American Women's History, and seminars on Witchcraft in Colonial New England and the History of the American Family. I also teach a First Seminar for Freshmen on America's First Ladies . I enjoy teaching and was awarded Allegheny College's Julian Ross Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1996. In recent years, I have explored the life of Allegheny College's most celebrated graduate, "muckraker" Ida Tarbell. I spoke on Ida Tarbell and the 'Business of Being a Woman' at the world-famous Chautauqua Institution in Chautauqua, NY, in August 1997. The full text of my remarks may be found at the Allegheny College Pelletier Library Ida Tarbell Web Page. My current research project is a history of American wedding celebrations.
