Cologne

Allegheny College is part of a consortium called “Pennsylvania Colleges in Cologne”. The program allows students with at least one year of college-level German to study in Cologne. Typically, between 15 and 22 students participate in this fall semester program which starts at the end of August and ends in the middle of December. The relatively small number of students ensures the individual attention that is instrumental in making a semester abroad successful. For full details, see Cologne Program.

Tübingen

The Eberhard-Karls-Universität Tübingen

One of Germany's oldest universities, this institution was founded in 1477. It is situated in a small city of 85,000 inhabitants, along the hills of the Neckar River valley. Part of the University is located in the old part of Tübingen (including the university museum housed in the castle at the town's summit), and parts are newly built, including the expansive Science Center. Students from Allegheny will attend the intensive language session (Sept. 1 to mid-October) and then generally spend two semesters at Tübingen (the spring semester usually ending in early July). Students will enroll in courses offered to visiting students, and those with appropriate language skills may enroll in regular university courses. The extended period of time in Germany provides tremendous opportunity to immerse oneself in the language and learning opportunities offered by this university town. Students can learn more about this program at  http://www.uni-tuebingen.de/uni/qzi/.

Austrian Study Tour

For three weeks in late May to early June, the Department of Modern and Classical Languages and the Department of Music offer an inter-disciplinary Study Tour to Vienna and Salzburg, Austria, under the direction of Professors Linda DeMeritt and Lowell Hepler. This course, where the music and language of Austria will be experienced and studied on site, is intended for students in either of the two disciplines represented, as well as for those with a more general interest in experiencing a foreign culture through its music and language. No prior knowledge of music or German is necessary.
