George
Elling '68, who majored in Economics at Allegheny, is a long time mineral
enthusiast. During a recent visit to Allegheny, Mr. Elling helped us to catalogue
hundreds of mineral samples that have been in storage. Mr. Elling also made
a donation for the Geology Department to purchase new museum quality mineral
cases and donated new mineral specimens that are highlights of the displays.
The new mineral displays are an overwhelming hit - be sure to visit Alden
Hall and see them!
Mr. Elling has focused his mineral collection on the world famous
Franklin, New Jersey locality. He recently shared his expertise on the Franklin
area mineralogy during a field trip with our
Mineralogy & Petrology and Geochemistry students and hosted our classes
to a tour of the Sterling Hill Mining Museum. Also, while on campus, Mr. Elling
kindly shared his first hand knowledge of the historic site of Pompeii, Italy
with Professor Cole's freshman seminar class "Volcanoes in Human History."
The students raved about Mr. Elling's enthusiasm and range of knowledge. Thank
you Mr. Elling, for enriching the students and our program
.
