On Thursday October 26 beginning at 6:30 PM in Quigley Hall auditorium the Geology Department is sponsoring a guest seminar led by Mr. John Sutphen ('78), Senior Vice President at O'Brien and Gere, Inc. The focus will be professionalism and ethics in the environmental industry and will be pertinent to students with interests in geology, environmental science, science and business ethics, law, and broadcast media. Refreshments will be served at 6:30, the seminar will begin at 7:00 and will be followed by informal questions and discussions.
The seminar will center around "Gilbane Gold" an educational video on the vital relationship between professionalism and ethics. The video traces the actions of a corporate employee, David Jackson. Jackson, an engineer, is faced with an ethics issue concerning the release of hazardous materials into the city of Gilbane's river. Jackson is faced with several ethical dilemmas. He is not only under pressure from his bosses to protect the interests of the company, but his personal and professional reputations are also on the line.
Following the video, there will be audience discussion concerning the responsibilities
of David Jackson. Jackson is not only responsible as an employee, but he is
also ultimately responsible for the citizens of Gilbane, since the river serves
as a source of income for the people of Gilbane. We will also discuss the
role of ethics and how they relate to businesses in a more general sense.
Ethics play a vital and crucial role to the business world of today, and we
will attempt to explore the variety of issues that ethics play in the world
of professionalism.
