Program Description

Allegheny's Creative Writing track prepares students for MFA and PhD programs in writing, or for other degree programs or jobs where proficiency in writing and creativity is prized (jobs in editing, publishing and literary agenting, for instance).

Creative Writers typically attend Single Voice Readings on campus, interact much with guest writers during their visits, and assist in the editing and/or management of Allegheny's literary journals (including The Allegheny Review, America's first exclusively undergraduate journal).

Course Requirements for the Creative Writing track include all of the standard requirements of the English major, plus the following (courses may double count when appropriate):

  • English 205 and 206
  • One of the following courses: English 207, 208, or 210.
  • Two of the following: English 301, 302, 303, 305.
  • At least one of the following courses: English 400, 401, or 403.
  • A Senior Project in creative writing.

Students will seek approval for either an original creative project or a critical study of a significant aspect of craft, genre, prosody, poetics, etc. (to be identified in consultation with members of the English department).
