CATALOGUE DESCRIPTION
"Study of the fundamentals of pictorial organization and expressive concepts through the use of oils and acrylics. Prerequisite: Art 151 or 155 or permission of instructor."
INTRODUCTION
Painting is undoubtedly one of the most exciting mediums with which to work as a visual artist. Its chief advantages are its immediate responsiveness to the painter's hand, the size, permanence and portability of its images, the incomparable power of illusion it presents and lovely, lucious color to delight the eye.
THE COURSE
This course is developed around one central idea--that to become an artist/painter, you have to make paintings, and you have to develop an awareness of painting's history.
PROJECTS
A series of projects will be done in the class. Each project will help to develop your perceptual and conceptual awareness of painting as an art form, and your ability to use paint as an expressive medium. Discussions and critiques of these projects will develop your critical abilities for evaluating your own and others' work.
VIDEOS
The video series, Shock of the New, narrated by Robert Hughes will be shown. Each video takes a major theme, such as political art, and explores its treatment in the art of our time. You are expected to attend the screenings of these videos and become conversant with the artists and ideas treated in them.
ATTENDANCE POLICY
Attendance is crucial to success. I allow three unexcused absences. Once those have been used, each additional unexcused absence will lower your final grade one degree (from B- to C+, for example.) Attendance will be taken. If you are more than 10 minutes late or leave early, you will be counted absent.
WORK EXPECTATIONS
Outside work is required. I expect you to paint a minimum of four hours per week outside of class on a regular basis.
PAPERS
From time to time, short papers may be assigned. Such papers should always be submitted typed, double-spaced.
QUIZZES
I give unannounced quizzes occasionally. These give me a sense of whether you are reading assigned materials, paying attention to the videos, taking notes on class materials, etc.
GRADING
There will be no final exam for this class. Factors taken into account in grading include the following:
60% Paintings and other studio work produced during the class.
40% Class participation indicated by: preparation, completion of assignments on time, intensity of involvement, contributions to class discussions and critiques, quiz and paper scores.
